How to Calculate Roof Load

Roof load tells you how much weight per square foot the structure must support. It is the sum of permanent dead loads (the roof itself) plus the larger of live load (occupants, equipment) or snow load. Building codes require the framing to be sized for this total load.

When You Need a Structural Engineer

Hire a licensed structural engineer when total load exceeds 50 psf, when adding heavy material (tile, slate) to an existing roof, when installing solar panels on roofs older than 20 years, after any structural damage, or when modifying load paths during a remodel.
