How to Size a Structural Beam

Sizing a structural beam means matching the beam's capacity to the span and load it must carry. The three inputs are span (between supports), tributary width (how much floor or roof drains onto the beam), and load (live + dead in psf).

Tributary Width

Tributary width equals half the joist span on each side of the beam. For a beam in the middle of a 24 ft floor, both sides span 12 ft, so the tributary width is 12 ft (6 ft from each side):

Depth Matters Most
For a beam, depth contributes to capacity by the cube of depth, while width is only linear. Doubling the depth gives 8x the strength; doubling the width only doubles strength. Always go deeper before wider when you can.

Beam selection from any calculator, including this one, is preliminary. Building permits require engineered drawings stamped by a licensed structural engineer. Always have an engineer verify your beam selection before framing - an undersized beam can sag, crack finishes, or fail catastrophically under load.
Bearing Length
Beam ends must have sufficient bearing on their supports. Rule of thumb: 1-1/2 inches of bearing on wood, 3 inches on masonry, and always centered on a solid post or stud pack. Insufficient bearing is a common inspection failure.
