How to Size a Header

A header is the horizontal beam above a window or door opening that carries the load from above to the jack studs on either side. The right header size depends on the opening width and what is bearing on it (just roof, one floor + roof, or two floors + roof).

IRC Prescriptive Tables

The IRC publishes prescriptive header tables (R602.7) that give ready-to-use sizes for common configurations. This calculator uses a simplified version of those tables for typical 30 psf snow load and 8 ft wall heights.

LVL for Tighter Spaces
LVL (laminated veneer lumber) is straighter, stronger, and more dimensionally stable than built-up lumber. Use LVL when you need a thinner header to maximize window or door height, or for any opening over 10 ft.

Jack and King Studs

Headers always sit on jack studs (also called trimmers). Jack studs are full-depth studs cut to fit under the header. King studs run full-height beside the jacks and are nailed to the header for lateral support:

  • Up to 6 ft - 1 jack stud per side
  • 6 to 12 ft - 2 jack studs per side
  • Over 12 ft - 3 jack studs or engineered design
Engineering Required for Custom
Use these tables for typical residential framing only. Heavy snow loads (over 50 psf), unusually tall walls, large openings (over 16 ft), or any unusual configuration requires engineered design with a stamped drawing.

Header Filler and Insulation

  • Use single header with plywood spacer and rigid foam backing when possible instead of solid double
  • In 2x6 walls, use LVL or insulated header with rigid foam on interior face
  • Flash header top with self-adhered membrane before installing window
  • Size header only as big as required - oversized headers waste wood and create thermal bridges

Interior Non-Load-Bearing Openings

Interior walls that carry no floor or roof load above do not need a structural header. A single 2x flat across the opening serves only as a nailing surface for drywall and trim. Saves money, lumber, and space for taller openings.

Flitch Plate Headers
For extreme loads in thin walls, a flitch plate header (steel plate sandwiched between two 2x lumber pieces) offers much greater capacity than wood alone. Flitch plates require specific bolt patterns and should be designed by an engineer.
