Roofing Calculator

Calculate roofing materials needed including shingles, underlayment, and accessories. Estimate by roof area and pitch.

How to Calculate Roofing Materials

Roofing calculations start with your roof's footprint area and adjust for slope. A steeper roof has more surface area than a flat one covering the same floor space. Getting this right prevents costly shortages mid-project.

Slope Factor Formula

The slope factor converts flat (footprint) area to actual roof area. Roof pitch is expressed as rise over a 12-inch run:

Slope Factor=√(rise2+144)12

Squares and Bundles

Roofing is measured in "squares" - each square covers 100 sq ft. Divide total roof area by 100 to get squares needed:

Squares=Footprint×Slope Factor100

Most asphalt shingles come 3 bundles per square. Architectural shingles may require 4-5 bundles per square depending on the manufacturer.

Measuring Tip
If you cannot safely access the roof, measure the building footprint from the ground and add the overhang (typically 6-12" on each side). Then apply the slope factor for your pitch.

Common Roof Pitches

Here are the most common residential roof pitches with their slope factors and walkability ratings:

PitchSlope FactorAngleWalkability

4:121.05418°Easy
6:121.11827°Moderate
8:121.20234°Difficult
12:121.41445°Requires equipment
Waste Factor
Add 10-15% waste for a simple gable roof. Complex roofs with hips, valleys, dormers, or skylights need 15-20% extra. The waste comes from cuts and partial shingles that cannot be reused.
