Gutter Calculator

Calculate gutter length, downspouts, hangers, and drainage capacity based on roof area and rainfall intensity.

How to Size Gutters and Downspouts

Gutters must carry all the water your roof sheds during the heaviest storm your region experiences. Undersized gutters overflow during heavy rain, damaging fascia, siding, and foundations. Proper sizing considers roof area, local rainfall intensity, and downspout count.

Downspout Capacity (at 5 in/hr rainfall)

Downspout SizeMax Roof AreaUse
2 x 3 in600 sq ftSmall roof, garage, shed
3 x 4 in1,200 sq ftStandard residential
4 x 5 in2,400 sq ftLarge or heavy rain areas

Downspout Count Rule

Install at least one downspout every 40 feet of gutter run, regardless of area math. A long gutter with only one downspout will overflow at the far end. The controlling factor is whichever gives more downspouts: the area calculation or the 40 foot rule.

Gutter Size Guide

  • 5 inch K-style - roofs up to 2,500 sq ft in moderate rain
  • 6 inch K-style - standard new construction, up to 4,000 sq ft
  • 7 inch K-style - very large roofs or heavy rain regions
Slope Toward Downspouts
Slope gutters at 1/4 inch per 10 feet toward the downspout. For runs over 40 feet, slope from the middle toward a downspout at each end, or add a center downspout. Verify with a 4 foot level during installation.
Hanger Spacing for Snow
Standard hanger spacing is 24 inches on center. In snow country, reduce to 18 inches or use snow-rated brackets. Ice dams apply extreme downward force that can rip weakly secured gutters off the fascia.

Material Options

  • Aluminum (.027 to .032) - most common, painted, will not rust, seamless options
  • Galvanized steel - stronger than aluminum, rusts after 15-20 years, cheaper
  • Copper - premium, develops patina, 80+ year lifespan, expensive
  • Vinyl - DIY-friendly, limited lifespan (20 years), cracks in cold
  • Zinc - European look, long-lived, works for curved roofs

Rainfall Intensity by Region

  • Pacific Northwest, Northeast - 4 to 5 inches per hour
  • Midwest, Mid-Atlantic - 5 to 6 inches per hour
  • South, Southeast - 7 to 9 inches per hour
  • Gulf Coast, South Florida - 9 to 11 inches per hour
Gutter Guards vs. Cleaning
Gutter guards (micro-mesh, foam, or screen) reduce cleaning frequency from 2 to 4 times per year down to once every 2 to 3 years. Expect $7 to $15 per linear foot for professional installation. Quality micro-mesh guards are the most effective but also the most expensive. Cheap screens often trap pine needles and make clogs worse.
