How to Estimate Roofing Underlayment
Underlayment is the secondary water barrier between the roof deck and the shingles. It is required by code (IRC R905.2.7) under all asphalt shingle roofs and by manufacturer warranty. Estimating starts with total roof surface area.

Ice and Water Shield
IRC R905.1.2 requires ice and water shield in cold climates (winter design temp at 20F or lower) along all eaves, extending at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line. Most installers use a 3 ft wide strip - that means 3 ft x roof eave length divided by 200 sq ft per roll.

Always Use Cap Nails
Smooth roofing nails can pull through underlayment in wind. Use plastic-cap nails or cap staples (1 inch caps) at 6 to 8 inches on center for synthetic underlayment, and 8 to 12 inches for felt.Synthetic Pays for Itself
Synthetic underlayment costs 5 to 10x more per roll than 15-lb felt but covers 2.5x the area, weighs less, installs faster, and tolerates weeks of UV exposure. For a full reroof, the labor savings often cover the price difference.
