How to Calculate Rafter Length

Rafter length is determined by the run (half the building width) and the rise (height of the ridge above the top plate). Together they form a right triangle - the rafter is the hypotenuse.

Multiplier Method

Carpenters use a multiplier per foot of run that depends on roof pitch. Multiply your run in feet by the table multiplier:

Half the Ridge Board
Subtract half the ridge board thickness from the run before calculating rafter length. For a 1.5 inch ridge, the run is reduced by 0.75 inches. Otherwise, your rafters will be too long by that amount.

Hip Rafter Length

Hip rafters run diagonally from the building corner to the ridge. They span a longer diagonal distance, so the multiplier is larger:

Hip Length=Run×(2+(pitch/12)2)
Bird's Mouth Depth
The bird's mouth notch (where the rafter sits on the top plate) cannot exceed one-third of the rafter depth. For 2x6 rafters, the notch depth is limited to about 1.5 inches. Cutting deeper weakens the rafter and may not pass code inspection.

Ridge Board vs. Ridge Beam

A ridge board is a non-structural 1x or 2x plank at the peak that aligns rafter tops. Collar ties every 4 ft prevent the walls from spreading outward. A ridge beam is a structural member that fully supports the rafters - required for cathedral ceilings or pitches under 3:12 where collar ties are impractical.

Overhang and Tail Cut Styles

  • Plumb cut - vertical cut, sits behind fascia - most common
  • Square cut - perpendicular to rafter - traditional look, exposed tails
  • Level cut - horizontal, supports soffit - used with boxed eaves

Use a Speed Square
A carpenter's speed square has degree markings for common roof pitches. Place the pivot point on the rafter edge and rotate to the correct pitch mark to scribe plumb cuts for the ridge and tail. This is faster than measuring angles with a protractor.
