How to Size Attic Ventilation
Proper attic ventilation prevents moisture buildup, ice dams, and premature shingle failure by allowing air to flow continuously from the soffits up to the ridge. The IRC defines the minimum ventilation ratio as Net Free Area (NFA) compared to attic floor area.
Net Free Area Formula
Total NFA=Attic AreaRatio
The ratio is 1:300 with a vapor barrier on the warm side of the ceiling, or 1:150 without a vapor barrier. Multiply attic area by 144 to convert sq ft to sq inches of NFA, then split evenly between intake (low) and exhaust (high) vents.

Balanced Airflow Matters
Always balance intake and exhaust 50/50. If exhaust exceeds intake, the system pulls conditioned air from the home through ceiling cracks, wasting energy. If intake exceeds exhaust, hot air pools at the peak. Mixing vent types (e.g. ridge plus gable) often causes short-circuiting where one steals air from the other.When to Use 1:150
Use the 1:150 ratio for older homes without a continuous vapor barrier, in humid coastal climates, or anywhere you have history of ice dams or attic mold. Over-ventilating is always safer than under-ventilating.
