How to Calculate Flow Rate (GPM)
Gallons per minute (GPM) is the universal measure of water flow in plumbing. Knowing GPM lets you size pumps, pressure tanks, irrigation zones, and water softeners. Two methods work for residential systems: the bucket test and the velocity formula.
Bucket Test Method
The easiest way to measure actual flow at a fixture: fill a known container and time it:
Filling a 5-gallon bucket in 40 seconds yields (5 x 60) / 40 = 7.5 GPM. Run the fixture wide open and test multiple times for accuracy.
Velocity and Area Method
The 448.8 factor converts cubic feet per second to gallons per minute. Target velocity is 5-8 ft/s for supply lines; exceeding 10 ft/s causes pipe erosion and water hammer.

Sizing Well Pumps and Pressure Tanks
A single-family home needs 5-10 GPM delivered at 40-60 psi. Add fixtures to estimate peak demand, then size for 75% of the sum (not all fixtures run simultaneously). A family of four typically needs 8-12 GPM peak. Pressure tanks should cycle the pump no more than 10 times per hour under peak flow.
