How to Calculate Plywood Sheets
Plywood (or OSB) sheet estimation is simple when your project is a rectangular floor or wall, and gets more complex with cutouts, angles, and openings. This calculator handles standard US 4x8 sheets, metric 2440x1220 mm sheets, and European 3050x1525 mm sheets.

Plywood vs OSB
OSB is 20 to 30 percent cheaper than plywood and is structurally equivalent for walls and roofs. Plywood is preferred for subfloors in humid climates because it resists moisture better. Both are code-approved structural sheathing.Waste Factor Guidance
- 10 percent - simple rectangular floor or full wall
- 15 percent - cut-up rooms with closets and doorways
- 20 percent - complex roof with hips, valleys, skylights
Hanging Direction Matters
On floors, run plywood perpendicular to the joists for maximum strength. On roofs, run sheathing perpendicular to rafters. On walls, vertical orientation provides the best shear resistance in wind and earthquake zones.
