How to Size Deck Footings

Deck footings transfer the weight of the deck into the ground. Sizing them correctly requires knowing the load per footing, the bearing capacity of your soil, and the depth of your local frost line. Under sized footings cause settling, heaving, and structural failure.

Bear on Undisturbed Soil
Never pour footings on backfill. The bottom of the hole must reach undisturbed native soil below the frost line. If you hit loose fill, keep digging or consult an engineer for an alternative.
Bigfoot Bell Footings
Plastic bell forms (Bigfoot, SquareFoot) widen the bearing base without requiring a wider hole throughout. They save concrete, speed installation, and are often required for decks over 30 inches tall.

Footing Depth by Frost Line

The frost line varies dramatically by region. Footings must extend below the frost line to prevent heaving damage that can tear the deck away from the house. Bottom of concrete must be at or below:

Post Base Connectors
All deck posts must sit on a manufactured post base (Simpson ABU, CBSQ, or equivalent) set in wet concrete. Direct contact between post and concrete is prohibited by the IRC because it traps moisture and rots the post. The connector also provides uplift resistance in high-wind zones.
