How to Convert Watts to Amps

Converting watts to amps is a daily task for electricians, solar installers, and anyone sizing a circuit, generator, or inverter. The watt is a unit of power; the amp is a unit of current. You cannot compare them directly - you need the voltage (and, for AC circuits, the power factor) to bridge the two.

DC Circuits

Direct-current circuits are the simplest case. Current in amps equals power in watts divided by voltage:

A 100 W solar panel feeding a 12 V battery bank pushes 8.33 A. A 240 W 24 V DC motor draws 10 A. Use DC math for solar arrays, battery banks, golf carts, and automotive circuits.

AC Single-Phase Circuits

Most residential wiring in the US (120 V, 240 V) is single-phase AC. Real loads shift current out of sync with voltage, so you must include the power factor (PF):

I=PWV×PF

Resistive loads (heaters, incandescent bulbs, ovens) have PF = 1.0. Motors, transformers, and fluorescent ballasts run PF 0.7 to 0.9. LED drivers and switching power supplies vary from 0.5 to 0.95.

AC Three-Phase Circuits

Commercial and industrial loads use three-phase power. The square-root-of-three factor accounts for the 120-degree offset between the three lines:

Use PF 1.0 for pure resistive loads (heaters, incandescent). Use 0.85 as a safe default for mixed loads. Use 0.8 or lower for motor-heavy panels. Nameplate data on motors and appliances always lists the actual PF.

NEC 80% Rule
The National Electrical Code requires continuous loads (lasting 3 hours or more) to be limited to 80% of the breaker rating. An EV charger that continuously draws 32 A needs a 40 A breaker, not a 32 A one. Size conductors and overcurrent protection using this rule to stay code-compliant.
