How to Calculate Residential Electrical Load (NEC Article 220)
Electrical load calculation determines the correct ampacity of a home's main service entrance, meter base, main breaker, and panel. Undersized services trip the main breaker during normal use; oversized services waste thousands of dollars in service equipment, conductors, and utility transformer costs. The National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 220 provides two methods: the Standard Method (this calculator) and the Optional Method for dwellings with specific configurations.
Getting this right matters for three reasons: code compliance (required for permits), safety (prevents overheating and fires), and future-proofing (EV chargers, heat pumps, and electric appliances drive up demand). A typical 2,000 sq ft 1990s home runs a 200 amp service; the same home adding an EV charger and heat pump may need 300 or 400 amps.
The Complete Load Calculation Formula
Step 1: General Lighting Load (NEC 220.12)
The NEC allocates 3 VA (volt-amperes) per square foot of dwelling area for general lighting and 15/20 amp general-use receptacles. For a 2,000 sq ft home, this is 6,000 VA. In metric terms, 3 VA/sq ft equals 32.3 VA per square meter.
Add 1,500 VA for each small appliance branch circuit (minimum 2 per kitchen per NEC 210.11(C)(1)) and 1,500 VA for each laundry branch circuit (minimum 1 per NEC 210.11(C)(2)):
Step 2: Apply General Demand Factor (NEC Table 220.42)
The NEC recognizes that not every lighting and receptacle circuit is at maximum load simultaneously. Apply these demand factors to the general subtotal:

Step 3: Fixed Appliance Load (NEC 220.53)
Fixed appliances (those that are fastened in place) include dishwashers, garbage disposals, microwaves, water heaters, hot tubs, pool pumps, well pumps, and similar. Sum the nameplate watts (treat as VA for load calculation). When 4 or more such appliances are installed, apply a 75% demand factor:

Step 4: Electric Dryer (NEC 220.54)
Electric dryers are calculated at 5,000 VA minimum, or the nameplate rating if higher. Gas dryers use a 15/20A branch for the drum motor and ignition - use their nameplate (typically 300-500 VA). Never skip this - the NEC explicitly calls out dryer calculation.
Step 5: Electric Range (NEC Table 220.55)
Cooking equipment gets special treatment because you rarely run all burners at maximum simultaneously. The demand table simplifies to:
- Single range 8 to 12 kW - 8,000 VA demand load
- Range 12 to 27 kW - 8,000 VA + 5% per kW over 12
- Counter cooking appliances on separate circuits - sum and multiply by 75%
Gas ranges are typically 300-500 VA (oven light, clock, controls). Wall ovens and cooktops on separate circuits are treated as separate cooking units.
Step 6: HVAC - Use Larger of Heat or Cool
Since heating and cooling never run simultaneously, use the larger load only. For central AC plus electric heat, compare the AC VA vs the electric heat VA and include only the larger value. For a heat pump with electric resistance backup, use the largest simultaneous combination.
Step 7: EV Charger (NEC 625.41)
EV chargers are considered continuous loads (running 3+ hours). Calculate at 125% of the nameplate rating. A Level 2 charger at 48 amps, 240V is 11,520 VA continuous, calculated as 14,400 VA in the load analysis.
Step 8: Total Amps and Service Size
Round up to the next standard residential service size:
Worked Example: 2,500 sq ft Home
- General lighting - 2,500 × 3 = 7,500 VA
- + 2 small appl. circuits - 3,000 VA
- + 1 laundry circuit - 1,500 VA
- Subtotal - 12,000 VA
- Demand applied - 3,000 + (9,000 × 0.35) = 6,150 VA
- + 4 fixed appliances - (8,100 × 0.75) = 6,075 VA
