How to Estimate Retaining Wall Materials
Retaining walls hold back soil and require careful attention to drainage, base preparation, and structural sizing. Estimation starts with wall length and height, block style, and volume of drainage gravel and geogrid for tall walls. Underestimating the base or drainage is the most common cause of retaining wall failure.
Block Count Formula
Blocks=Wall Facesq inBlock Facesq in
Drainage Gravel Volume
Gravelcu yd=Length×Height×1 ft27
Assume a 12 in zone of 3/4 in clean stone behind the full wall face. A 40 ft x 4 ft wall needs (40 x 4 x 1) / 27 = 5.9 cu yd of drainage gravel.
Common SRW Block Coverage
| Block Type | Face Size | Per 100 sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Small (garden) | 4 x 12 in | 300 |
| Standard (6 in) | 6 x 16 in | 150 |
| Versa-Lok / Allan | 6 x 16 to 18 in | 134 to 150 |
| Jumbo (8 in) | 8 x 18 in | 100 |
Base and Drainage Requirements
- Base trench depth - 1/10 of wall height + one full block (6 to 12 in typical)
- Base trench width - 2 feet or wider than block, whichever is larger
- Compacted crushed stone base - 4 to 6 in of 3/4 in minus, in 2 in lifts
- Drainage gravel behind wall - 12 in zone of clean 3/4 in stone, full wall height
- Drainpipe - 4 in perforated pipe with filter fabric at the base
- Daylight outlet - drainpipe must discharge where water flows away
Geogrid Requirements by Wall Height
| Wall Height | Geogrid | Embedment |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3 ft | Not required | n/a |
| 3 to 4 ft | 1 layer mid-wall | 4 to 6 ft back |
| 4 to 6 ft | Every 2 ft of height | 6 to 8 ft back |
| Over 6 ft | Engineer required | Per design |
Tall Walls Need a Permit and Engineer
Retaining walls taller than 4 feet almost universally require a building permit and a structural engineer's stamped drawing. Surcharge loads (driveways, slopes, pools behind the wall) trigger engineering at lower heights. Always check local code.Step Backs and Batter
Most SRW systems include a 1 inch per course setback (batter). This backward lean improves stability and resists soil pressure. Do not try to build SRW blocks plumb; use the batter built into the system.
