How to Calculate Rebar Weight

Rebar is sold and priced by weight (per pound, kilogram, or ton), not by length, because different bar sizes have very different unit weights. Accurate weight estimation is essential for estimators, buyers, and shipping logistics.

Weight Formula

Weight=Pieces×Length per piece×Unit Weight

For example, 50 pieces of 20 ft #5 rebar: 50 x 20 x 1.043 = 1043 lbs (about half a short ton). In metric, 50 pieces of 6 m 16mm rebar: 50 x 6 x 1.578 = 473 kg.

Cost Formula

Cost=Total Weight×Price per lb / kg

Rebar is usually quoted per ton in the US and per tonne in metric markets, but supply yards sell in pounds or kilograms at the cut counter. Convert to the unit your supplier uses before comparing quotes.

Standard rebar lengths: 20 ft (6.1 m) in the US, 6 m / 9 m / 12 m in metric countries. Plan waste for laps (40 to 60 bar diameters per ACI 318) and cutting accuracy.

Calculated weight is theoretical. Add 5 to 10 percent for lap splices and saw cuts on straight bar, or 10 to 15 percent when fabricating stirrups, hooks, and bent shapes. Scrap drops climb fast on jobs with lots of short pieces.
