How to Calculate Mortar

Mortar is the bonding agent between masonry units. Estimating correctly requires knowing the unit size, joint thickness, and the type of masonry (block, brick, or stone). The calculation depends on joint volume per square foot of wall, not simply the number of units.

An 80 lb bag of premix Type N or S yields about 0.6 cu ft of mortar. Divide your total volume by bag yield to get bag count, then add 5 to 10 percent waste for mixing loss and scraps.

Mortar Types (ASTM C270)

  • Type M - 2,500 psi; foundations, retaining walls, below grade
  • Type S - 1,800 psi; load-bearing walls, exterior
  • Type N - 750 psi; general exterior, soft brick
  • Type O - 350 psi; interior non-load-bearing, historic
  • Type K - 75 psi; historic preservation only
Stronger Is Not Better
Never use a mortar stronger than the masonry unit itself. Soft historic brick can be crushed by hard Type S mortar during thermal cycles. Match mortar strength to the unit. When in doubt, Type N is the safe default for most non-structural work.

Working Time and Temperature

  • Pot life - use within 2 to 2.5 hours of mixing
  • Re-tempering - add water up to 2 hours, never after initial set
  • Cold weather - do not lay below 40°F without heated enclosure
  • Hot weather - keep wet with burlap above 90°F to slow drying
Protect From Rain for 24 Hours
Fresh mortar must be protected from rain for at least 24 hours. A single heavy rain can wash cement from the joints, leaving weak sandy mortar that fails within months. Cover work with tarps if rain is forecast.
